چکیده

{ This paper evaluates the use of packet scheduling to provide multiple service classes for bursty data traac. In particular, we study the performance of the weighted fair queueing algorithm by simulating various scenarios in a packet cellular wireless network similar to an EDGE system. The results show that, due to the burstiness of data traac, traditional work-conserving packet scheduling algorithms such as weighted fair queueing can not achieve the desired performance unless the system is heavily loaded. Similar results hold even when using priority queueing, which is an extreme form of weighted fair queueing. We also nd that best eeort traac should be managed carefully to avoid ineecient usage of the network, especially in a low capacity cellular environment.

Performance Evaluation of a MAC Protocol for ATM over Satellite

In this paper we first give an overview of various proposed MAC schemes for ATM over Satellite and analyse the performance of an Adaptive Random-Reservation Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol which can support all ATM service classes while providing the required Quality of Service (QoS). Our study focuses on parameter optimisation of the multiple access schemes for ATM over a GEO satellite wi...

Hierarchical Scheduling for Multiple Classes of Applications in Connection-Oriented Integrated-Service Networks

Multiple classes of conventional and multimedia applications are expected to be supported by the emerging connection-oriented integrated-service networks, where bestefJort flows and quality-of-service (QoS) flows co-exist. We propose a novel two-level hierarchical scheduling algorithm, which provides an integrated, simple scheme to distribute the link bandwidth among a dynamic set of flows in t...

M1, M2, ..., Mk/G1, G2,..., Gk/l/N Queue with Buffer Division and Push-Out Schemes for ATM Networks (RESEARCH NOTE)

In this paper, loss probabilities and steady state probabilities of data packets for an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) network are investigated under the buffer division and push-out schemes. Data packets are classified in classes k which arrive in Poisson fashion to the service facility and are served with general service rate under buffer division scheme, finite buffer space N is divided in...

Performance analysis of OCDMA PON configuration supporting multi-rate bursty traffic with retrials and QoS differentiation

An Optical Code Division Multiple Access (OCDMA) Passive Optical Network (PON) is a highly promising PON configuration, thanks to the potential of OCDMA technology in eliminating channel contention and efficiently supporting multi-rate traffic with different QoS requirements. In this paper, we provide a mathematical framework for a call-level performance analysis of an OCDMA PON that accommodat...

Multirate Scheduling of VBR Video Traffic in ATM Networks

One of the major attractions of Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) networks for transporting bursty video traac is its ability to exploit the multiplexing gains of packet switching while providing quality of service guarantees. Unfortunately, most of the multiplexing mechanisms proposed in the literature fail to exploit the multiplexing gains of ATM. In this paper we propose a multirate service m...
